Free player in football: rights, obligations and opportunities
Being a free player in professional football does not simply mean not having club". It is a specific legal status that opens up opportunities — but also comes with obligations that many do not know.
A free player can sign up outside the transfer window, can negotiate with any club without restrictions, and does not generate transfer cost between clubs. But that does not mean that your signing is free: the new club may have to pay compensation for training if the player is under 23 years old, and the player must correctly handle the times and documentation so as not to lose opportunities or expose himself to legal problems.
In this article I explain exactly what a free player is according to FIFA regulations, how that status is reached, what rights and obligations it implies, and how to take advantage of that window of opportunity in the best way.

What a free player is
RETJ does not use the expression "free player " or "free agent" as a technical term. What exists in FIFA regulations is a series of situations in which a professional player has no current contract with no club — and therefore you can enroll in a new one without a transfer with compensation between clubs.
In the practice of TMS, the concept appears when the transfer order is classified as a procurement "without transfer agreement" and "without payment" The new club hires the player directly because there is no previous club that has contractual rights over him.
The 4 Ways to Be a Free Player
| Status | How it works | Documentation required in the TMS |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Natural maturity of the contract | The contract reaches its completion date without renewal. The player is automatically released. | Proof of the expiration date of the last contract |
| 2. Termination by mutual agreement | Player and club agree to terminate the contract before its expiry. Both parties consent. | Proof of termination by mutual agreement with date |
| 3. Unilateral termination with justifiable cause | The player terminates because the club failed (payments, abusive behavior, etc.) or the club terminated without justifiable cause. The player is free. | Proof of termination and its motive. FIFA evaluates prima facie whether there was a justified cause. |
| 4. Long-term inactivity (30-month rule) | The player stopped playing more than 30 months ago since his last official match. Stop being enrolled in the association of his last club. | Verification that more than 30 months have passed since the last official match |
In all cases, the new club must load in the TMS the proof of the date of termination of the last contract and the reason for termination. This document is obtained directly from the player’s previous club. If the previous club does not respond, it is recommended to request it from the previous federation.
Registration outside the transfer window
One of the great advantages of the free player is that, in certain cases, it can Sign up outside the transfer windowArticle 6, paragraph 3, of the RETJ provides for exceptions:
A professional player who has unilaterally terminated with justified cause, or whose contract has been terminated by the club without justifiable cause, may be registered outside the window. FIFA evaluates the situation prima facie.
You can register after closing the window if the player's contract was naturally expired or terminated by mutual agreement before the end of the period of registration of the contracting club.
Exception (b) has an important temporal nuance: termination of the contract must have occurred before closing the window, even if the actual registration is done later. If the contract expired on June 30 and the window closes on August 31, the player can register in September without exception of validation.
The 6 month rule: pre-contracts
Article 18, paragraph 3, of the RETJ states that a professional player is free to sign a contract with another club if your current contract expires within 6 months. This enables "precontracts" — agreements signed before the player is formally free.
The requirement: the club concerned must communicate in writing its intention to the current club The violation of this obligation generates sanctions.
Example: A player in the Italian A Series has a contract until June 30, 2026. From January 1, 2026, he can negotiate freely with any club. A Spanish club sends formal communication to the Italian club, negotiates with the player, and sign a pre-contract to be incorporated on July 1, 2026. The player arrives as free, without transfer cost.
"Free" does not mean "free": compensation for training
This is the most surprising point for clubs that sign young free players. Although there is no cost of transfer between clubs, the RETJ states that the compensation for training is generated even if the transfer is made at the end of the contract (art. 20).
This applies in two situations:
- When the free player signs up for the first time as a professional in any club → compensation for training is due to all clubs where you were enrolled since age 12.
- When the professional free player is transferred internationally before the end of the calendar year of his 23rd birthday → compensation for training is due to the previous club.
A 21-year-old Argentine player finishes his contract with a Superleague club and signs as free with a French Ligue 1 club (Category I UEFA). There is no transfer cost, but the French club must pay compensation for training to the clubs that formed it from the age of 12, calculated with the costs of the UEFA Category I. The amount can be hundreds of thousands of euros.
A 25-year-old Brazilian player finishes his contract with a Spanish club and signs as free with an English club. As he has already spent the natural year of his 23rd birthday, No compensation for trainingThere is also no solidarity mechanism (there is no compensation for transfer of which 5 %). It is a genuine incorporation at no regulatory cost.
Derogation within the EU/EEA: the obligation to offer a contract
If an EU/EEA club does not offer the player a written contract at least 60 days before expirythe right to receive compensation for training — unless it can justify its right in any other way (Article 6 (3) of Annex 4).
This is relevant for young free players: if their previous club (within the EU/EEA) did not offer them renewal in time and form, the new club may argue that it is not appropriate to pay for training to the previous club (although it is for previous training clubs).
Mechanism of solidarity: does it apply to the free?
No. The solidarity mechanism (5 % transfer compensation) is only activated when there is a payment between clubs within the framework of a transfer. If the player arrives free (contract expired, termination of mutual agreement), there is no compensation for transfer and therefore there is no basis for calculation for 5%.
This is a crucial difference from the compensation for training, which can be generated when the player arrives free (if he is under 23 years old).
The role of the agent in the situation of the free player
For a free player, have a FIFA-licensed football agent The agent can:
- Identify interested clubs and manage contacts
- Negotiate the terms of the employment contract
- Coordinate Trials if the player needs to demonstrate
- Manage the documentation required for the TMS
According to the Football Agents Regulations, the agent's fees are paid by the client (in this case, the player). However, if the annual negotiated remuneration of the player is less than USD 200,000, the destination club can agree with the player to assume the payment of the agent's fees associated with the transaction (Article 14, RAF Section 3).
Common errors of free players
- Do not retain proof of termination of the contract. Without this document, the new club cannot complete the transfer order in the TMS. Ask for it before leaving the previous club.
- Assuming that "free" is invisible to the system. Even if there is no transfer, the international transfer is also processed in the TMS and requires STI if less than 30 months have passed.
- Do not consider compensation for training. If you are under 23, the club that signs you up will have to pay for training. If you do not know, you may decide not to sign up. Manage this information from the start.
- Sign in a hurry without advice. The urgency of finding a club leads many free players to accept unfavourable conditions. Better to wait and negotiate well than to sign a contract that does not suit you.
- Do not explore the inscription outside the window. If your contract expired before the window closes, you can sign up later. Do not miss an opportunity to ignore this exception of Art. 6.
- Don't stay in shape. Clubs that sign free want players available immediately. If you are out of shape or injured, opportunities close fast.
Strategic Opportunities of the Free Player
Being free is not necessarily a disadvantage. In fact, for many clubs signing free players is a deliberate strategy to reinforce unexpended plants on transfers. Some points in favor:
No transfer cost. The club does not pay another club. This is especially attractive for clubs with tight budgets or in leagues with less purchasing power.
Temporary flexibility. If your contract expired before the window close, you can sign outside it. This gives you more time than other players to find the best option.
Increased bargaining power. The money the club saves on handover can result in a better salary or bonus to the firm (signing bonus) for you. Many free players negotiate better terms than they would if a transfer were mediated.
Free choice of fate. You don't depend on your current club accepting someone else's offer.
Checklist for free player
Make sure you have proof of completion of your previous contract with date and reason. Have a valid passport. If you work with a representative, check that the representation contract is in order.
If your contract expires before the window closes, you can sign up later. Take advantage of that flexibility. If it expires later, you need the registration to occur inside the window.
If you are under 23 years of age, inform the club concerned that there is an obligation to pay compensation for training. Don’t be the last minute surprise to stop the operation.
