The change in how sports video is consumed
Five years ago, if you wanted to show your game, you needed a well produced multi-minute reel. Today, a 45-second clip in the correct format can reach tens of thousands of plays in 48 hours. Video consumption changed radically, and with it, the way players can become visible.
Football shorts, i.e. short vertical videos of between 15 and 60 seconds, became the preferred format for both casual consumption and initial scouting. YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok have algorithms that favor the discovery of new content, which means that any player with quality material has real chances of being seen by people who otherwise would never have found it.
Why Scouts Watch Shorts, too
Modern scouts not only search databases or receive recommendations from agents. Many have active social media accounts where they follow football-related hashtags from different categories and regions. A well-labeled short can reach a scout who is looking for exactly the player profile you have.
In addition, the short format has a huge practical advantage: it does not require a large time commitment. A scout can see 20 shorts in 15 minutes and mark the profiles that interest him to explore later. With a long reel, that same process would take hours.
How to Make an Effective Football Short
The difference between a working short and a missing short is in the first 3 seconds. If the opening is not shocking, the viewer moves on to the next one. Here are the keys:
Start with the action, not the context
Do not introduce. The short has to start directly on the most striking move. If you have a goal with technical definition, show the definition in the second 0, not the corner shot that preceded it.
Use slow motion at the right time
The slow motion, applied selectively at the peak of the play, makes the action look more impressive and gives the viewer time to process what he is seeing. Don't use slow motion throughout the clip; only at the moment of greatest impact.
Subtitles and text
Many users watch videos without sound, especially on the cell phone. Add overlapping text with your name and position, and if the play has any outstanding technical details, you can mark it briefly ("first time", "right gol", "taco").
Finish with something memorable
The short has to close hard, not fade. A repetition of the play from another angle, a celebration or a closing text with your contact details works well as finishing.
The right hashtags make a difference
Posting without hashtags is like shouting in the desert. Here are some of the most effective hashtags for your content to reach the right people:
- #football and regional variants (#football, #soccer)
- #highlights + your position (#highlightsdelantetero, #highlightsmediocampista)
- #Scouting and #futballerbuscaclub
- The hashtag of your country or league (#futbolargentino, #ligaargentina)
- Your category (#sub20, #reserve, #first)
Don't overcharge hashtags. Between 5 and 10 well chosen work better than 30 generics.
Frequency of publication
The algorithms of all platforms favor accounts that publish consistently. No need to publish every day, but keep a regular cadence. Two or three shorts per week is a sustainable pace that allows to accumulate progressive visibility.
If you have accumulated multi-game material, you can plan the posting and distribute it over time instead of uploading it all at once.
Shorts as first contact, profile as closure
The short generates interest. But when a scout or agent wants to know more, he needs to find complete information: history, statistics, position, skillful foot, contact. That’s why the short has to go somewhere.
Include in the description or text of the video the link to your profile in Soccer CV. Thus, every short you post works as a gateway to your full professional profile. Short format captures attention; the profile turns that attention into a real opportunity.
If you don't have your profile armed yet, this is the time. The short video ecosystem is at its highest point of growth, and players who take advantage of it now are going to have a significant advantage in visibility over those who continue to rely only on traditional channels.
